Beaver's at Risk

Critter Care Wildlife Society took into care 3 baby beavers badly contaminated in oil. They were found swimming alone, with no sign of any adult which in itself is very concerning, in a ditch in Mission, BC that was covered in thick motor oil. Obviously, some uncaring citizen felt it okay to dump oil in a ditch.

Critter Care was called and a couple of interns headed over and rescued them. They received a couple of “Dawn” soap baths that removed the oil from their fur but to what extent of internal organ damage may remains to be seen.

Unfortunately, two of them have since died and the other one at this point in time seems to be doing okay. But time will tell.

Then Critter Care Wildlife Society took into care another smaller beaver from Hope, BC. She was found by a lady walking her dog near a lake where she spotted this little bundle all by itself on a pier fully exposed to being grabbed by a passing eagle or perhaps a dog running loose. It is unknown how she was separated from or what had happened to her family.

This lady brought her to Elizabeth Melnick’s Wildlife Center in Abbotsford who in turn called us.

She is gaining weight and enjoys her bottle but is now showing more interest in solid food such as yams and cob corn. As odd as it may seem, she is still a little reluctant to swim but she is still very tiny and would normally be taken around on mom's back. She does like the shallow water though so will eventually be a swimming machine in a few weeks' time.

Raccoons are one of the most familiar and adaptable wild mammals in Southern British Columbia. They have established themselves in forests, wetlands, farmlands, and even our cities, thanks to their clever hands, masked faces, and curious nature.
