The Golden Mole

The Golden Mole

Critter Care is no stranger to unusual species or mutations in animals; however, on June 19th the centre received an animal that had all our staff and interns very excited, an albino mole! Albino moles are extremely rare. It is estimated that one in every 100,000 moles is albino, so it is a wonder he came into our centre and graced us with his presence. Albinism is the genetic mutation of certain genes, which causes an absence of pigment, or “melanin” in the body.

Moles need large amounts of food to supply their bodies with energy. In order to provide a mole with the energy it needs, it consumes around 60%-100% of its body weight in food a day! The “Mole”, as it were, presented with symptoms of head trauma, so he was put on anti inflammatories to improve the swelling. A large terrarium with dirt was prepared for him. At first, he moved very little and had to be syringe fed as he could not eat on his own. He was being fed every hour, around the clock. Little by little, he began eating on his own and moving around in his dirt with speed and energy! We are excited to watch our golden boy improve even more as we get him ready for release.
