Kandai Doi (Japan/Ohio)

After my first internship in 2009, I was thinking about my fawns which I raised. Then, I had to think about internship for this summer. I thought about taking an internship in other place, but I really desired to come back and work at CCWS so I can learn things more deeply.

On the first day I came, a fawn came in. It made me feel that I was back to my place. During 2 months in here, I raised 2 fawns, 4 coyotes, a marmot and 9 raccoons. I was really glad that they let me work on many species. Raising fawns and raccoons were repeating from last year, but raising coyotes and a marmot was totally new stuffs for me. I could saw various rehabilitation methods among those species that I could not touch last year. I really satisfied with my job as a surrogate dad and help them to be back into wild.

The work that was memorable was the taking two coyote pups, Cameron and Sophie. When they came in, they were really dehydrated and got mange. Feeding process took so much time, but they were getting healthy, and wild. Of course fawns’ squeaking and marmot’s whistle are also unforgettable. And I never forget 2 coyotes which had problems on their eyes so they couldn’t made it. Within these experiences, I saw many moments of the life and death, and interactions between humans and nature, which I think that important to live together among wildlife and humans.

I’m sure that my choice, coming back to CCWS rather than going to other place is right. I felt many thing changed during I wasn’t in here, but every new people and people from last year were so helpful, and we made so much fun. I say my second experience at CCWS is as great as last year. I still want to come back for third time at CCWS!
