River Otters Release - James Island

In June 2009 James Island staff noticed a very young otter alone and apparently in difficulty near an inland pond on the island. We took the otter in and cared for her for a few days until we could transport her to Wild Arc, a Vancouver Island wildlife rescue facility. At the time we put our names forward as a potential release site for the otter if she recovered.

We were told a few weeks later by Wild Arc that she had been transferred to a more suitable mainland center – Critter Care Wildlife Society. Nessie (as the otter was called) was cared for and recovered well at Critter Care. In March 2010 Nessie and two other otters, which had also been rehabilitated at Critter Care, were released back onto James Island. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to welcome Nessie back to the island! The release went according to plan and the three young and healthy otters seemed to relish their new-found freedom.

Otter Release on James Island 2010This September Critter Care Wildlife Society has released another 4 rehabilitated otters onto James Island. The release site at James Island is a perfect habitat providing these rehabilitated otters with a safe environment to begin life in the wild.

James Islandi s very active in the community with various charity organizations and local groups. We have a strong commitment to preserving our natural habitats and eco-systems and the wildlife that reside in them.  Nature Conservancy Canada has several covenant areas on James Island which are home to several endangered species of plant and insect unique to BC.

We look forward to continuing to support Critter Care Wildlife Society and their admirable work with Canadian Wildlife.
